GOP will move to 'get rid of' Trump in 2027 over his 'mental deterioration': analysis

President Donald Trump will “only get crazier” until Republicans decide he has become too much of a liability and force him from office, a political writer argued.

The New Republic’s Timothy Noah predicted Monday in a new analysis that Trump’s declining popularity and increasingly erratic behavior could prompt members of his own party to move against him during the first half of 2027.

“There is a point at which Trump’s approval number will fall so low, and make Trump such a liability to fellow Republican officeholders, that they’ll move to get rid of him,” Noah wrote. “I don’t know what that number is, but I expect he’ll reach it during the first half of 2027."

Noah argued that a devastating midterm election for Republicans would dramatically weaken Trump’s grip over the party. Any effort by Trump to challenge the results, or prevent newly elected Democrats from taking office, he wrote, “will drive his approval ratings down further, and drive further upward the public’s conviction that he’s lost his marbles.”

While the writer compared persuading Trump to step down to “wrestling the car keys away from grandpa,” he predicted that the 67 Senate votes needed to convict and remove the president could be within reach.

"My reason for thinking Trump may be like the Berlin Wall is the recent acceleration in Trump’s mental deterioration," he added.

Among the benefits for Republicans, Noah told readers Monday, would be elevating Vice President JD Vance to the presidency. He argued that scenario would be the GOP’s “best shot at holding the White House in 2028.”

“This scenario may strike you as implausible,” Noah wrote. But when he attempted to envision an increasingly unstable Trump remaining in office through January 2029, he concluded, “my mind just goes blank."
