A viral TikTok video shared an intense family debate between former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz and his mother, revealing a behind-the-scenes disagreement over President Donald Trump's foreign policy — and some direct warnings.
In the leaked conversation — apparently recorded by somebody sitting behind Gaetz on a plane — the former representative's mother aggressively warned him against criticizing Trump, saying, "MAGA will turn on you. You will lose viewership."
She also told her son his political career was over and urged him to focus on maintaining his media presence.
Gaetz admitted the messages were genuine in an X post on Tuesday.
"Apparently someone sitting behind me on a flight recorded me without my knowledge," he wrote.
"They found me texting my mother about news of the day, family finances, and working on my laptop. Please let this be a reminder to everyone to CALL YOUR MOTHER! (and maybe get a screen protector)."
In the text conversation, Gaetz's mom's ire was apparently raised because of her son's opinions on Iran.
He texted her several foreign policy arguments, claiming that "Iran has been three months away from nukes since 1992" and challenging the premise of military intervention. He highlighted historical precedents, noting that "Clinton had a good Iran policy" and "Reagan showed restraint after Iranians killed some Americans."
But she responded, “Your days in Congress are over, practice on law? Let’s not mess up the media gig," apparently referring to his show on One America News Network.
"The president has been a very good friend to you. He hates betrayal. Be smart, not stubborn,”
Gaetz concluded the conversation by quipping, "Lol. I'll move to my fully paid for condo in paradise."
